Director of Canaan Land Children's Home
Meet Mrs. Laura Goins Director of Canaan Land Children's Home
Hi! My name is Laura Gunter Goins. I was born on November 7, 1964 in Mount Airy, North Carolina to Lonnie and Evelyne Gunter. I graduated high school from North Surry High in 1983 but did not attend college until 2000 (long year off huh?) where I studied Business Administration. So in 2002 I graduated from Surry Community College with an Associate in Applied Business Administration and a certificate in Accounting. I have taken several classes through Continuing Education to improve and add to my education. In that break from school there, I married Ricky Goins from Mount Airy, helped him start his own business, contract painting, and gave birth to two handsome boys. Joseph Andrew Goins was born on August 3, 1989 and Matthew Adam Goins was born just sixteen months later on December 31, 1990. Yes, I must admit they should have been twins. I jokingly say that God knew I couldn't handle them both at once but the truth is it really wasn't that different, two bottles, diapers, etc. I am crazy about them. They are great young men with a heart for people. I have always had a passion for children all ages: that includes those trying to find their place in this world as adults. I know their heartache and remember situation's I lived through by looking at their struggles. The year may be 2007 but it was the very same when I was that age! How much do I love kids, well, let me see, I drive a school bus for an elementary school here in Surry County, I have been youth leader at my church, Genesis Church, I serve as Worship Leader in the "Children's Church" which we call Generation Next: Youth Force (ages 4-12) and GN: Teen Force Extreme (ages 13-19) now. Oh yeah, the most exciting job yet, VBS director, I get to be a "BIG KID" and it's all good! I have worn other hats when it comes to being with youth and I have cherished each one, serving them to the best of my ability is just who I was created to be. I am looking forward to Canaan Land being tangible. I am ready to hug the kids that need hugging, rock the kids that need comforting, and tell stories to youth about what I did when I was that age, silly things as well as life lessons. God gifted me with encouragement and I desire to pass that on to kids that would have otherwise had no hope. I want to lay hands on them and pray for them, speak good things over them and let them know that when people fail them, Jesus is always there. My vision, it's to see God's word come to pass over Canaan Land and Genesis Church. Am I an instrument in that, yes, I am. It's not because I hold a title of Director but because it is what I am to do for the Lord.
